Ryan Baird (USA) Guitar & Percussion (e/c) Ryan Baird began playing guitar around the age of 10, and composing at 13. His deep interest in jazz music began at the unique Maine Jazz Camp, where he encountered some of the New York City jazz scene’s most influential performers and composers. His studies at the camp lead to his first opportunities to play his original compositions, as well as performances with faculty members Bill McHenry and Tony Malaby. After completing two years of the jazz curriculum at the University of Maine while still in high school, Ryan went on to study jazz performance and composition at the University of Southern Maine and the City College of New York. His teachers have included guitarists Pete McCann, Rez Abassi, Sean McGowan, and Bob Thompson. Ryan has performed throughout the United States with many projects including jazz quartet “Post No Bills”, “The Get Band”, and a trio under his own name. He has shared the stage with many talented musicians such as Adam Chilenski, Sam Caldwell, RJ Miller, James Tweedie, Devin Gray, and Adam Frederick at such events as the Maine Jazz Festival, the Deer Isle Jazz Festival, and Portland Maine’s “Dimensions in Jazz” series. Since arriving in Shanghai, where he currently resides, Ryan has already performed at many festivals and concerts throughout China. He is a full time teacher at the JZ School, and can be seen performing at venues like the JZ Club, the Melting Pot, and Cotton’s. |
