• The JZ Youth Jazz Orchestra (JZYO) aims to provide Shanghai’s most talented young musicians with an opportunity to work at the highest level with like-minded young musicians.

 

• JZYO will utilize the most contemporary band coaching methodology and introduce this methodology to the music community in China.

 

• JZYO meets on Saturdays at least 10 times each semester (February to June & September to January).

 

• JZYO will give several performances each year, including at the JZ International Music Festival and at JZ Club. Opportunities to perform regionally and internationally are sought.

 

• JZYO engages professional musicians/educators as tutorial staff from time to time, including visiting music professionals.

 

• JZYO endeavors to assist in the development of big band culture in China by engaging as many young musicians as possible, performing in public as often as possible, and assisting in the development of “sister’ bands around China by offering to share expertise and materials.

 

JZYO FACULTY

 

Conductor: Mats Holmquist

A music educator with 30 years of big band leading and youth band conducting experience, including being the Swedish National Youth Band conductor. Mats also has a book published by Aeberesold “The General Method”.

JZYO APPLICATION

 

The JZYO is open to any student under the age of 19 on June 30, 2012. 

 

Auditions will be accepted for the following instruments:

 

•       Trumpet

•       Trombone (and/or bass trombone)

•       Saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone and any doubles)

•       Flute,

•       Clarinet,

•       Piano

•       Bass

•       Guitar

•       Drum set

•       Flugalhorn

 

JZYO AUDITIONS

JZYO Auditions will be held on February 4^th and 11^th 2012 at JZ School.

Audition material is available.

At the audition, prospective members will be asked to play the audition piece, also to sight read music chosen by the conductor. Thirdly, as an option, prospective members will be invited to demonstrate improvisation.
