JZ Improvising Orchestra

(Alec Haavik,Roman Stolyar)

JZ Improvising Orchestra is a JZ School’s new project initiated by Russian composer and educator Roman Stolyar and American saxophone player Alec Haavik. Based on an idea of creating music “here and now” collectively and freely, this project is open for musicians from different music streams – from traditional Chinese and Western classical music to jazz and noise. Series of SIO workshops are directed to enrich participants’ music vocabulary, to extend their boundaries of perceiving various styles and genres of advanced music of nowadays, to develop their freedom of expression in music, and to open their hidden creative forces through the process of collective improvisation. Tension and release, call and response, tones and noises, structure and spontaneity are key words to describe the essence of music that Shanghai Improvising Orchestra is supposed to born.

 About  lecturers

Roman Stolyar

Educated both as jazz pianist and contemporary composer, Russian improviser Roman Stolyar melts various styles and genres in his playing – from ancient polyphony to modern counterpoints and clusters. One of key figures in Russian improvised music, he has collaborated with many outstanding musicians, including Dominic Duval, William Parker, Vinny Golia, Oliver Lake,  Weasel Walter, Thomas Buckner, and many others. His improvisational workshops have garnered him an international reputation, and have led to many invitations to create and implement workshops for organizations and universities around the world, including University of Michigan, Mannes College, California Institute of the Arts, Chateu d’Oex Music School in Switzerland, Frescobaldi Conservatory in Ferrara (Italy), and the Versailles Conservatory. He is an author on the first Russian book on teaching free improvisation - “Modern Improvisation: A Practical Guide for Piano”.

Alec Haavik

JZ Music Artist,  Shanghai music icon Alec Haavik performs on tenor and soprano sax, painting an interdimensional world of musical explosions. Melding modern jazz, rock, and shamanism, Alec leads a fleet of ensembles known as the “Friction Universe,” questioning the nature of jazz.Alec’s primordial musical soup includes cello at age 5, trombone as a teenager (performing with guest soloist Branford Marsalis), and two recording contracts as an “indie” rock artist. Alec received his Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance at the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Dick Oatts and Mark Turner and performed and recorded with schoolmate, Famous Jazz Singer Jane Monheit.
