on your own? Learn to play together and interact in a musical group and gain
useful and effective performance experience. Ensemble classes are not just for
advanced students but are also a helpful and fun way to foster communication,
cooperation and expression under expert tuition. Ensembles are offered in the modern musical styles of: Jazz, Blues/Rock, Gypsy Jazz, Flamenco, and
Flamenco Compas

Flamenco/Compas Ensemble for Beginners

The JZ
School Flamenco Compas Master Class is taught by guitarist, composer and
singer, Abraham, an original "gitano" from Sevilla in the South of
Spain.
|
The class is
suitable for anybody interested in learning flamenco music and will be divided
into two sections in each class.
|

Compas
|
|
Rhythms essential
to Flamenco such as Alegria, Buleria, Tentos, Tango, Rumba, Solea, Seguidilla,
Tarantos, Rondena and Fandangos. The rhythms will be learned through “Palmas”,
hand clapping.

Flamenco Ensemble
|
|
Rhythms
learned in the compas section will be produced in an ensemble setting where
instrumentalists (guitar, bass, brass, wind, voice, percussion and hand
percussion) will learn how to play famous flamenco tunes together in a group.

For flamenco
enthusiasts who have some experience of playing flamenco rhythms but need to
learn how to play and interact with others in a flamenco group/band. Advanced
rhythms will be introduced and the classical and contemporary forms of flamenco
music will be produced in the class. Instrumentalists (guitar, bass, brass,
wind, voice, percussion and hand percussion) are invited to join in the fun.

Group instrument classes at JZ School have been systemized and now
follow set materials. Group classes are an affordable way for those either;
starting out in music, picking up their instrument again after a long sojourn,
or, for active learners wanting to go the next step and learn jazz chops.

From samba to salsa, rumba to
cha cha cha, it is known all around the world for its passion and intoxicating
rhythms. Learn about this wonderful art form and its many styles with master
percussionist Wilson Farias from Columbia. Students will learn to play such
fascinating instruments as the timbales, congas, guiro, claves and more. This
class is open to all ages and skill levels.

For singers aspiring to sing jazz. An exploration of styles, lyrics, delivery and repertoire in a supportive,
informative and fun low-pressure group setting.
|
|
In this class repertoire is worked on, students
will be given choices of songs they can learn to sing and the teacher will help
them improve their pitch, phrasing, dynamics and diction. Students will get to
sing along with professional jazz sing-along (Jamey Aebersold) and will help
develop their musicianship (count the tempo, start/end a tune, and find the
right key for themselves).

Rock Guitar

In the first semester we will look in-depth at three songs
covering most aspects of the lead and rhythm guitar from those songs. As well
as learning the guitar parts and techniques for these songs, we will also focus
on arrangements (i.e. how a song is put together) and being aware of what is
coming next as you are playing. You will also learn some of the great classic
rock riffs and how to incorporate these techniques in your own riffs.

Modern
Music Theory I
|
|
Music theory
facilitates better understanding, communication and the exploration of music
for a learner. A music student not wanting to study music theory is a bit like
an aspiring writer not wanting to learn language skills! In this semester-long
course, students will learn about basic pitch and rhythmic notation, intervals,
basic scales and chords. The class will also cover basic concepts in
sound production, music listening and performance practice, and will involve
basic ear training.

Modern
Music Theory II

This year-long course
will cover the basics in harmony, form and analysis. Although focused on
jazz, the concepts and materials covered are relevant for all forms of modern
music. The students will develop skills to think critically about a piece
of music and understand its harmonic and melodic content as well as
intent. Students will also begin to learn the basics of composition in
the styles covered.
