The JZ School Flamenco Compas Master Class is taught by guitarist, composer and singer, Abraham, an original "gitano" from Sevilla in the South of Spain.

The class is suitable for anybody interested in learning flamenco music and will be divided into two sections in each class.

Compas

Flamenco Ensemble

Rhythms learned in the compas section will be produced in an ensemble setting where instrumentalists (guitar, bass, brass, wind, voice, percussion and hand percussion) will learn how to play famous flamenco tunes together in a group.

Flamenco Ensemble (Intermediate)

Sunday: 12:30-14:30PM

For flamenco enthusiasts who have some experience of playing flamenco rhythms but need to learn how to play and interact with others in a flamenco group/band. Advanced rhythms will be introduced and the classical and contemporary forms of flamenco music will be produced in the class. Instrumentalists (guitar, bass, brass, wind, voice, percussion and hand percussion) are invited to join in the fun.

In this class repertoire is worked on, students will be given choices of songs they can learn to sing and the teacher will help them improve their pitch, phrasing, dynamics and diction. Students will get to sing along with professional jazz sing-along (Jamey Aebersold) and will help develop their musicianship (count the tempo, start/end a tune, and find the right key for themselves).

Rock Guitar

Saturday: 3:30-4:25PM

In the first semester we will look in-depth at three songs covering most aspects of the lead and rhythm guitar from those songs. As well as learning the guitar parts and techniques for these songs, we will also focus on arrangements (i.e. how a song is put together) and being aware of what is coming next as you are playing. You will also learn some of the great classic rock riffs and how to incorporate these techniques in your own riffs.

Modern Music Theory I

Music theory facilitates better understanding, communication and the exploration of music for a learner. A music student not wanting to study music theory is a bit like an aspiring writer not wanting to learn language skills! In this semester-long course, students will learn about basic pitch and rhythmic notation, intervals, basic scales and chords.  The class will also cover basic concepts in sound production, music listening and performance practice, and will involve basic ear training.

Modern Music Theory II

Saturday: 1:30-2:25PM

This year-long course will cover the basics in harmony, form and analysis.  Although focused on jazz, the concepts and materials covered are relevant for all forms of modern music.  The students will develop skills to think critically about a piece of music and understand its harmonic and melodic content as well as intent.  Students will also begin to learn the basics of composition in the styles covered.
